Why You’re So Hard on Yourself
The hidden toll of self-criticism—and how to stop it.
Brother,
Let me ask you something:
When was the last time you spoke kindly to yourself?
For most men, the answer is “I can’t even remember.”
We’ve been trained to believe that being hard on ourselves is how we improve. That pushing, criticizing, and beating ourselves up will somehow make us stronger.
But here’s the truth:
Self-criticism isn’t tough love—it’s sabotage.
When you’re constantly hard on yourself:
Your confidence shrinks. Instead of building yourself up, you tear yourself down.
Your mental health suffers. You carry unnecessary guilt, stress, and anxiety.
You stay stuck. Fear of failing stops you from taking risks and growing.
It’s like trying to climb a mountain while someone (your own mind) keeps pulling you back down.
How to Stop the Cycle
The good news? You can change this.
Catch the Criticism. Pay attention to when you’re being harsh on yourself. What triggered it? What are you saying?
Ask: Would I Say This to a Friend? You’d never talk to a friend the way you talk to yourself. Treat yourself with the same respect.
Shift to Solutions. Instead of saying, “I’m such a failure,” ask, “What can I learn from this?” Growth comes from reflection, not ridicule.
Build Yourself Up
Being kind to yourself isn’t weakness—it’s strength.
Because here’s the thing: when you treat yourself with respect and patience, you build confidence, resilience, and the courage to try again.
So next time your mind starts to criticize, ask yourself:
Am I building myself up, or tearing myself down?
The answer might just change your life.
Stay strong,
Michael
